Important Travel Camera Features
I promise we’ll get right to the good stuff. First, let’s understand why a travel camera is good.
It would be best if you first define your needs before you can choose a camera for travel.
Do you want something lightweight and portable? What about something weatherproof? Professional image quality? Priced reasonably? Can it handle both landscapes and portraits?
These are the key camera features that you need to be aware of.
WEIGHT & SIZE- The days of a larger camera being a better one are over. You’ll need a small, lightweight camera if you plan to travel. The technology has advanced a lot.
Manual Settings Professional photographers need to be able to control their camera settings manually to get the perfect shot. If you’re looking to improve your photography skills, choose a camera that has full control.
MEGAPIXELS- Many people believe that having more megapixels will make them better. It’s not always the case if the pixels are small. More megapixels and a larger sensor can give you more detail. You can also “crop” the image without losing quality.
APERTURE- F/numbers measure the lens aperture. For example, f/1.4, f/2.8, f/4 etc. The lower the number, the better the lens will perform under low light conditions (and the more expensive it is). Low numbers can also produce a “bokeh effect” in portraits.
ZOOM RANG- A zoom lens allows you to get closer, especially when it comes to wildlife or people. The bigger the zoom, the larger the camera. It’s a matter of personal choice how much zoom you want. It’s nice to be able to zoom without having to change lenses when traveling.
HD/4K Video — Most high-quality travel cameras shoot video at HD 1080p. Some cameras have 4K capability, which most people do not need unless they are doing professional work. Cameras that shoot 4K tend to be more expensive.
WiFi/BLUETOOTH Some cameras come with a wireless network that allows you to upload photos to your smartphone or computer instantly. It’s a great way to upload pictures from your travels to social media sites without having to use a computer.
INTERCHANGEABLE LUNS High-end DSLR and mirrorless cameras come with interchangeable lenses. This allows you to choose the best lens for any situation. Fixed lenses are common on smartphones and compact travel cameras.
WEATHERPROOFING — Will your travel camera withstand the elements? Some cameras are more resistant to moisture and dust. Weatherproof cameras are ideal for shooting in dusty and wet conditions.
RAW — Not all cameras take RAW images. Camera RAW saves images without internal modification, unlike JPG. Advanced users prefer it because they have more flexibility when editing images later with software.
STABILIZATION – Some cameras and lenses have Optical Image Stabilization. This feature compensates for “handshake” when using slower shutter speeds to keep images sharp. For even better results, some cameras have internal sensor stabilization.

A camera with a larger sensor will perform better under low-light conditions because it can capture more light.
You’ll get more detail with a larger sensor. This will allow you to print large or crop smaller images without losing any quality.
