It is an excellent day trip if you only have a short time in W.A. This is a great day out if you are only in Western Australia for a few days. You will be able to drive off-road over the Lancelin dunes, and you can also shoot down on your sandboard. Also, you’ll get to see the Pinnacles and enjoy a seafood meal in Cervantes. You can also see the native animals of Caversham Wildlife Park.
Yanchep is not included in the tour, but you will get to see Koalas at a wildlife park. The itinerary below is more laid back, but you can add some of these stops to your day if you’re not afraid of a long one.
Day trip from Perth to Lancelin & Yanchep
Start the day off by driving straight up to Lancelin. The wind will be less, and you can enjoy a relaxed afternoon by completing the longest driving stretch. Strong winds often hit the W.A. coast during the afternoon. No one wants sand flying everywhere!
You can explore the vast dune system in many different ways. There are plenty of parking spaces available for free, and you can walk wherever you like.
If you go all the way to the top, you will want to slide back down. You can hire sandboards from several locations around the Town. Booking in advance is not necessary, but there are two options if you’re determined to get one.
Perth Quad This company offers hire for $10 per 2 hours. You can also hire quad-bikes and dune buggies. This experience can sell out during nice weather, so it is best to reserve in advance.
In Town, many businesses rent out sandboards. You can either find one on your own or reserve one online at a store that has stock. It costs $12.50 per 2.5 hours.
Dune buggies can be a lot of fun, and you should try them if this is something new to you. Lancelin’s Dunes are one of the best locations in Australia to go on this adventure. It has a huge area, and the views are incredible from the top.
Lunch in Lancelin
You will get hungry after running up and down dunes for two hours. You won’t have to worry about lunch; head into Town and find the Endeavour Tavern.
You’ll want to try and get a table outside in the beer garden. This location is on the beachfront with a fantastic view of the ocean.
Other Things To Do in Lancelin
Lancelin Lookout- This lookout is located on the ocean side of the Lancelin Beach Hotel and offers a nice view along the coast.
Lancelin Beach- A dip in the clear waters of Lancelin is the perfect way to cool down after a day on the sand. The beach can be very nice, but it can also accumulate seaweed.
The Pinnacles, Nambung National Park- The Natural Landmark The Pinnacles are located 77km north of Lancelin. The drive will take about 50 minutes and another 140km (1hr 15min) to get to Yanchep. This is a little extra driving, but it’s manageable if you leave early in the morning.
Yanchep National Park
Yanchep National Park is next on the list to visit. The drive back to Perth is about 76km and takes about 50 minutes.
Entry fees to national parks are $15 per vehicle. W.A. We recommend purchasing a W.A. The same applies to Nambung National Park, so if you plan on visiting both parks, then a pass is a must.
McNess House Visitors Centre
If you’re not sure where to begin your exploration, the visitor center can be a good place to start. The visitor center can give you information on the attractions and provide tickets for the small museum.
Walking
You can take a walk after driving here. You can choose from a number of short walks, but I recommend ‘Wetlands Walk.’ This 2.7km circuit takes you around a part of the Lake and includes the Koala Boardwalk.
This walk is a great place to spot cockatoos and other birds like kookaburras. The boardwalk allows you to get a close-up view of the koala colonies.
Caves
The national park has a few limestone caves. One is set up to be explored by visitors. The other is used for weddings and events.
Organized tours are available to explore the Yanchep Crystal Cave. Explore the underground world of stalagmites, stalactites, and otherworldly formations. ).
