What is Nature-based tourism?

Nature-based tourism can be described as a type of experience tourists seek that engages them directly with the natural environment. The essence of a nature-based tourism experience is one where nature is central.

In rural Australia the natural environment is one of the greatest assets to nature-based tourism operators. Here are the rivers, creeks and estuaries that attract fresh water kayakers, bird watchers and fisherman. Here too are canyons, gorges, hills and mountains that attract abseilers, rock climbers and hikers of all ages and fitness.

In the paddocks, the grazing cattle, sheep, horses or goats and alpacas provide another way for nature-based tourists to engage. Chooks in the coop, the vegetable garden with salad readying to be picked; the orchard of custard apples, macadamias, pears and other fruits provide a seasonal banquet.

Nature-based tourism is as much an activity for thrill-seeking adventurers as it is for those wanting to escape the maddening city crowd, to relax in nature - to watch, walk, listen or connect with country amongst the rivers, lakes, mountains, beaches, canyons or stars on where your property resides.
